We love to read in first grade! We did some partner reading during language group time. Following the text with our finger helps us with fluency, reading each word, sounding out unfamilar words, and recogonizing words we already know.
We had an awesome day for the symphony. The Wheaton Symphonic band concert included selections from the sea. The conductor was so silly, he thought we were going swimming. He dressed in a mask and snorkel!
We had a wonderful day to explore the forest habitat. We began our 1/2 mile hike by discussing collections. The children were given a Ziploc bag to collect items they found interesting on the forest floor. The guidelines we used for collections were: it must be found on the forest floor; it must be smaller than your right hand and bigger than your left thumb; it must not be living. After our hike we discussed sorting rules and sorted the items by their attributes. We compared our sorted groups using math vocabulary: most, fewest, tallest, thinnest, and shortest. We compared the colors and textures. After our discussion we returned the items to the forest for the animals to use as shelter and food. Our reward was a fun playground where we played and ate a picnic lunch!
First day of first grade 2017! We love the new playground!
What an awesome year of learning, sharing, loving and caring. May God bless you this summer!
