Describe the path to your current vocation.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Business from Michigan State University.  After college I worked for the Hotel Iroquois on Mackinac Island for two years, followed by Enterprise Rent-A-Car at the Detroit airport and a Cadillac branch for two years.  Next, I worked for the Lutheran Home Livonia, a skilled nursing facility, in Admissions for 3 years before transferring to Social Services for 3 years.  Our family moved to Illinois 3 years ago and I have been the school secretary for about a year and a half.

When did you become a Lutheran?

I have been a Lutheran since baptism. My mom grew up attending St. Paul Lutheran Church and School in Livonia, MI.  I grew up at St. Matthew Lutheran Church and School in Westland, MI.  When I left there, I attended Lutheran High School Westland.  Before we moved to Illinois, my daughter was able to start her education at St. Matthew as well and even had some of the same teachers I had growing up.  Our first priority in our move to Illinois was to find a church and school that felt like home, so we toured 8 schools in the area before deciding on Bethany and we are very happy with our decision!

What do you love most about your job?

The thing I love the most about my job is that I am able to learn the personalities of the children and families in the school.  One of the younger children called me the “School Mom” and I really feel that is an accurate description of this position.  I am glad to be able to be a positive influence on the day, whether it be an ice pack to make a bump feel better, a bowl of Cheerios when a child forgets a lunch, or sometimes just lending an ear to someone who is having a bad day.

What was your longest or most favorite road trip?

My favorite road trip has been a camping trip in the Upper Peninsula, Michigan with my sister.  Our favorite place is the Porcupine Mountains, on the West side of the U.P.  We stayed at a campsite with only one other tent there, on a river that had stepping stones so close that you could walk down the entire river to Lake Superior.

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies include cross stitching, reading, cooking, kayaking, and fishing.  I love to try new restaurants.  I also love to hike in State Parks and explore little towns that I have never been to before.
