Happy Reformation Day

After learning about Martin Luther’s life and how he started the Reformation, we enjoyed some fun activities on October 31 to celebrate the 501st anniversary of Luther nailing the 95 Theses on the church door in Wittenberg. We practiced sequencing the events in his life and then were given a challenge to see how many hammers we could make out of 1.5 Reese’s peanut butter cups and pretzel sticks.

Make 10!

Our new set of facts to memorize are the 10 facts. These are numbers that combine to equal 10. We played a fun card game to help us practice and learn the combinations.

Prairie Plants

After learning unique characteristic of 13 different prairie plants, we each got to pick our favorite and use art supplies to create it. These projects are now decorating our classroom prairie bulletin board!

Attribute Train

Each time we work with attribute shapes in math we have a harder challenge to complete. We’ve learned that each shape is identified by 3 attributes: color, shape and size. In this attribute train game each shape could only share 1 attribute with the shape before it. See if you can start with the top shape and identify the 1 similarity and 2 differences between that shape and the next, all the way down the train!

Buddies

Our classroom buddies this year are the 4th graders. We also started something new and sit with them each week in chapel too. This week we enjoyed an extra recess on the nicest day of the week with them!

word work

During this last Spelling unit we worked on the long e vowel teams of -ee and -ea and the “ow!” sounds of -ow and -ou. We enjoyed playing Magic Square to make -ea words and then playing the “Ow!” spinner game to become more familiar with those words.

Fact Family Fun

In Math we learned about how 3 numbers can go together in a fact family to create 2 addition sentences and 2 subtraction sentences. Understanding these relationships greatly helps in memorizing our number facts! We did an activity to find our family, determine our relationship to each other, figure out all 4 of our number facts, and then choose 1 fact to share with our classmates with the big foam dice. Click here to see our family pictures!

Reading activities

This week we’re practicing main ideas and details. After watching a read aloud video, we each wrote down some details we heard. Then we got into groups, shared our details, and had to come to a consensus on what we thought the book’s main idea was.

We also practiced writing and identifying questions and statements. To do this, we did silent interviews. We first wrote questions for our partner, then traded papers and wrote a statement to answer. After we got our papers back, we got to use the play microphones to practice our speaking and listening skills by doing a live interview. We even had some follow-up questions!

Green Earth Institute

We had so much fun on our 1st field trip of the year! We toured the farm; saw the prairie, wetland, and woodland habitats and learned characteristics of each; experimented with different ways of seed dispersal; looked at different examples of resource conservation such as solar panels, windmills, rain barrels, green roofs, and underground water storage tanks; talked about healthy vegetable choices; ate examples of vegetables that come from different parts of the plant; and learned about why crop rotation is helpful!

Attribute Shapes

In Math we introduced attribute shapes and learned that all pieces have 3 attributes: color, shape, and size. We practiced sorting different ways and than had to identify which shape Mrs. Janetzke took when we weren’t looking!

Paper Plate Meals

We practiced being adults and using the grocery ads to plan meals! We worked in groups of 3 and divided up who was taking what meal. We planned foods for each food group and rated how healthy our meal was.
