Ravens

After learning about how God took care of Elijah by sending food with a raven, students thought of ways God provides for both our physical needs and our spiritual needs. We listed them on the back of the raven. Some friends even added the bread and meat to their raven cut out!

Martin's Big Words

We learned about who Martin Luther King Jr. was and were surprised to find out that he was named after Martin Luther, who we studied earlier this year! We read a book called Martin’s Big Words and then did an activity to analyze some of his big words. Students worked in groups on the word analysis and then each made their own poster with their information and a self-portrait. Check out all our “Big Words” posters in the hallway!

Contraction crashes

In spelling we listened to sentences and spelled the two words we heard that could be shortened into contractions. Then, we crashed the two words, and drew in the apostrophe where the letters got crashed out to make the contraction. Watch a clip of this activity here!

Similar shapes

In Math we practiced making similar shapes on geoboards. Similar shapes are the same shape, but different sizes. Then we each designed our own shape and recorded it on our paper. Last, we went around and tried to create our classmates’ shapes on our geoboard by copying off their paper.

Packing Peanut crosses

Last month in Social Studies we learned that there is an alternative way to make packing peanuts that uses a renewable resource instead of the traditional Styrofoam ones that are made from oil and aren’t biodegradable. This week we discovered that they are made from potato starch and can actually dissolve in water! As an introductory activity to our unit on creative ideas, we revisited the design process to make a cross sculpture. The only material we could use was potato starch packing peanuts, and they only way to connect them was to lick them and stick them together. Check out their awesome work!
